TOMBSTONE TRIBUTES

Otis Young
by: Sean Strebin

Born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1932, Young joined the Marine Corps at the age of 17.  After seeing action in the Korean War, Young worked as a writer and an actor in off-Broadway productions during the late 1950s and early 1960s.  Then in 1968, Young became the first African-American actor to become a television co-star when he played Jemal David in the Western The Outcasts with Don Murray.

After a less than sporadic career in films and television, Young retired from acting and became a Professor of Communications at Monroe Community College (1989-99).  He was also an ordained minister.  Young died October 12, 2001 at age 69 of a stroke.
